El tratamiento con probióticos en la enfermedad de Alzheimer: una revisión sistemática de estudios experimentales

La enfermedad de Alzheimer es la forma más común de demencia, destacando en
ella el déficit de memoria y caracterizándose principalmente por la acumulación de
placas beta-amiloide (Aß) y la formación de ovillos neurofibrilares en el cerebro, lo
que causa la muerte de neuronas y el consiguiente déficit cognitivo. Se ha propuesto
que el tratamiento con probióticos, actuando en la microbiota intestinal, podría
intervenir sobre el eje intestino-cerebro y paliar los síntomas de esta enfermedad. Tras
realizar una búsqueda de artículos experimentales en las bases de datos Medline,
Proquest, Scopus y PsycInfo se analizan 14 estudios diferentes en los que se estudia el
efecto de distintos probióticos sobre la microbiota intestinal, el sistema nervioso y el
comportamiento de sujetos humanos y animales. Los resultados muestran un cambio
en la microbiota intestinal que derivó en mejoras en el metabolismo, la fisiología del
sistema nervioso central y el comportamiento de los sujetos, por ejemplo, una
disminución de la ansiedad. A pesar de que se necesita realizar un mayor número
sobre un mismo probiótico y con personas como sujetos, esta línea de investigación
podría resultar en un tratamiento efectivo para los síntomas de la EA.
