La Folía canaria. Tradición y sentimiento. Estudio sobre sus orígenes y análisis de sus características musicales y dancísticas hasta la actualidad

Abstract

El foco de estudio de este trabajo es la folía canaria, baile tradicional que, junto a la Isa y la Malagueña, conforman los tres géneros más importantes del folclore musical de las Islas Canarias aproximadamente a partir del año 1700. Partiendo del contexto social, económico, político y cultural de las Islas en el momento del nacimiento de la folía, trato de describir el desarrollo y evolución de este género hasta nuestros días. Por eso, además de abordar la problemática en cuanto al origen de este baile, el trabajo expone aquellos aspectos menos estudiados como son la evolución musical y coreográfica de la danza hasta la actualidad. Por otro lado, se abarcan algunos aspectos novedosos no tratados hasta hoy en este campo (limitados a la isla de Gran Canaria): 1. La organización de las escuelas encargadas de la continuidad y transmisión del folclore en las Islas 2. El funcionamiento de las diferentes agrupaciones folclóricas existentes, abordando cuestiones como su fundación, organización, ensayos, actuaciones, financiación, etc. La folia de las Islas es esencial para comprender las tradiciones musicales de los canarios. Precisamente su gran importancia y su indudable belleza justifican la elección de este género para este trabajo, tratando así de contribuir al entendimiento y difusión de un patrimonio de gran riqueza no tan popular por cuestiones geográficas.

The focus of study of this work is the Canarian folia, a traditional dance that, together with Isa and Malageña, make up the three most important genres of musical folklore of the Canary Islands from approximately the year 1700. Based on the social, economic, political and cultural context of the Islands at the time of the birth of the folia, I try to describe the development and evolution of this genre to this day. Therefore, in addition to addressing the problem regarding the origin of this dance, the work exposes those less studied aspects such as the musical and choreographic evolution of the dance to the present day. On the other hand, some novel aspects not treated to this day in this field (limited to the island of Gran Canaria) are covered: 1. The organization of schools responsible for the continuity and transmission of folklore in the Islands. 2. The functioning of the different existing folk groups, addressing issues such as their foundation, organization, rehearsals, performances, funding, etc. The folia of the Islands is essential to understand the musical traditions of the Canary Islanders. Precisely, its great importance and undoubted beauty justify the choice of this genre for this work, thus trying to contribute to the understanding and dissemination of a heritage of great wealth not so popular for geographical reasons.
