Españoles en el Reino Unido. El impacto del Brexit: flujos, consecuencias y narrativas

Abstract

El presente artículo pretende analizar el impacto sociodemográfico de la salida del Reino Unido de la Unión Europea en la reciente emigración española residente en este país. Dicho proceso político ejerció un efecto en el estatus de los españoles como residentes en el Reino Unido, que pasaron a convertirse en inmigrantes extranjeros y, por tanto, a verse regidos por la normativa de extranjería. Concretamente, se pretende realizar una aproximación a la evolución de los flujos de entrada y salida de españoles del Reino Unido y al impacto del proceso político en la decisión de permanecer, retornar o reemigrar. La metodología que se utiliza es doble. En primer lugar, se centra en el análisis cuantitativo de las migraciones a partir de los microdatos de la Encuesta de Variaciones Residenciales. Así mismo, se analizan un total de 18 entrevistas a emigrantes españoles que vivieron en el Reino Unido durante el proceso de salida de la Unión Europea (2016-2020) por parte de dicho país, en las que se estudiarán sus discursos sobre el Brexit y sus narrativas sobre esta acción política. Los resultados permiten ver que hay un rechazo unánime por parte de los emigrantes españoles a la salida del Reino Unido de la Unión Europea. Sin embargo, al mismo tiempo, no se perciben actitudes hostiles en su vida diaria. Finalmente, se comprueba que el proceso de salida afecta principalmente a las personas con menor tiempo de residencia en el Reino Unido y mucho menos a quienes pudieron acceder al estatus de residencia permanente.

This article analyses the socio-demographic impact of the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union on recent Spanish emigrants living in the UK. The political process resulted in a change in the status of Spanish nationals living in the United Kingdom. They became subject to immigration regulations, effectively reclassified as foreign immigrants. The study will examine the inflow and outflow of Spaniards from the United Kingdom, as well as the impact of the political process on their decision to stay, return or re-emigrate. The methodology employed is twofold. Firstly, the study focused on the quantitative analysis of migration based on microdata from the Residential Variations Survey. Furthermore, 18 interviews with Spanish emigrants who were resident in the United Kingdom during the Brexit process (2016-2020) were conducted and analysed. The interviews examined the participants’ views of the Brexit process and the effects on their daily lives as migrants in the United Kingdom. The findings indicate a unanimous rejection of the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union by Spanish emigrants. At the same time, respondents did not encounter hostile attitudes in their daily lives. Finally, it is confirmed that the exit process mainly affects those who have been resident in the United Kingdom for a shorter time, and affects those who were able to obtain permanent resident status much less.
