Japanese passive democracy and education

Abstract

This chapter studies the particularity of democracy in Japan in relation to its history and group-oriented culture. Starting from the theory of democracy and Japanese groupism, this chapter analyzes the state of democracy in Japan. The research methodology used has been quantitative-descriptive on the two Asian Barometer databases, Wave 2 on Japan and the Young Voters' Value Surgey Wave 3 (2009). It is concluded that there is a significant gap between the idea and concept of democracy held by the Japanese and the collectivist education and political culture in Japan.

Este capítulo estudia la particularidad de la democracia en Japón en relación con su historia y la cultura orientada al grupo. Partiendo de la teoría de democracia y el grupismo japonés, este capítulo analiza el estado de la democracia en Japón. La metodología de investigación usada ha sido la cuantitativa-descriptiva sobre las dos bases de datos Asian Barometer, Wave 2 sobre Japón y el Young Voters’ Value Surgey Wave 3 (2009). Se concluye que existe un hueco importante entre la idea y el concepto de la democracia que tienen los japoneses y la educación y cultura política colectivista en Japón.
