Is the smart mobile phone transforming university educational reality?

Abstract

Smartphones (SMPs) play a vital role in the lives of young people and in the university classroom. There are few studies of the use of SMPs by university students, and the existing knowledge is inconsistent and lacking consensus. This article shows the validity of a theoretical model of the use of SMPs in higher education, in the context of the theory of uses and gratifications, and the knowledge gained from previous studies on the use of SMPs by adolescents. The results suggest the existence of a specific educational function for the use of SMPs in university classrooms. Despite the emergent nature of this function, the educational use of SMPs in higher education presents potential consolidation as a source of gratification and satisfaction of educational needs. Their inclusion in the everyday activity of university classrooms will require considerable effort to adapt the educational system, and the training of students and teaching staff must be improved in order to reduce possible interference in learning the communicative and expressive play functions of SMPs.

Los teléfonos inteligentes (SMP) juegan un papel vital en la vida de los jóvenes y en las aulas universitarias. Existen pocos estudios sobre el uso de SMP por parte de estudiantes universitarios y el conocimiento existente es inconsistente y carente de consenso. Este artículo muestra la validez de un modelo teórico del uso de SMP en la educación superior, en el contexto de la teoría de usos y gratificaciones, y el conocimiento adquirido a partir de estudios previos sobre el uso de SMP por parte de adolescentes. Los resultados sugieren la existencia de una función educativa específica para el uso de SMP en las aulas universitarias. A pesar del carácter emergente de esta función, el uso educativo de los SMP en la educación superior presenta potencial de consolidación como fuente de gratificación y satisfacción de necesidades educativas. Su inclusión en la actividad cotidiana de las aulas universitarias requerirá un esfuerzo considerable de adaptación del sistema educativo, debiendo mejorarse la formación de estudiantes y profesorado para reducir posibles interferencias en el aprendizaje de las funciones lúdicas comunicativas y expresivas de los SMP.
