The railway line that joined the cities of Lorca and Baza,
and therefore connected Andalusia with the Region of
Murcia and the rest of the Spanish Mediterranean coast
from the end of the 19th century, is currently one of the
most interesting and valuable historical paths in southern
Spain. It is an architectural and engineering creation
endowed with great personality, which brings together
a rich diversity of building heritage and civil engineering
showcasing British design and style in its bridges, viaducts
and buildings. Nevertheless, from the commercial
operation and geographical location perspectives, this
railway line occupied a marginal position since it came into
service, which would end with its definitive closure on the
first day of January 1985, due to its low profitability. Today
this railway line is being subject of several initiatives for
its recovery, including its possible incorporation into the
modern railway network. For this reason, we present an
investigation aimed at improving the knowledge of this
railway and launching a reflection on the consequences
that this fact would have from a heritage perspective.
It is proposed that the conservation and protection of
this railway line must be defined from the perspective
of its knowledge through the complete study of each
of its properties, as well as of the whole infraestructure,
achieving its complete heritage and graphical cataloging.
