Abstract
A finales del siglo XIX coexistieron en España diversas terapéuticas en las que se
aplicaba el agua. Con carácter ortodoxo unas, otras como medicinas no ortodoxas,
todas se valieronpara su divulgación entre los enfermos del simbolismo del agua. Desde
la ortodoxia, la hidrología médica, la talasoterapia y la hidroterapia fueron las menos
proclives a incluir en su discurso valores no científicos. Sin embargo, los movimientos
naturista y kneippista abundaron en las imágenes del agua (particularmente el agua
fría) como sustento de sus proyectos regeneracionistas, tanto en lo físico como, fundamentalmente,
en lo moral. Este último aspecto fue el vínculo que hizo de la terapéutica
Kneipp una forma de difusión de la interpretación que se hizo en España del reformismo
social católico.
