This paper is part of a research project in Anthropology, funded by the Ministry of Work and Social Affairs, and carried out in 2006 in the Autonomous Community of Madrid, Spain. The primary goal of this project was to analyse the changes in models of family structure, particularly the case of families reconstituted after separation/divorce. Looking at how people use kinship terms that commonly are applied to members of the nuclear family, we analyse the perceptions and joint representations that exist in homes reconstituted by new married couples. The actors involved in the new familiar arrangements are the father/mother with or without child custody, his/her new spouse, the children of one or two of the spouses, siblings, half-siblings, and step-siblings.
