«Cuanto más hunde un árbol sus raíces, más alto crece». Cuento maravilloso y construcción hagiográfica de una santa del Tardomedievo: Beatriz de Silva (ca. 1424-1491)

Abstract

A significant painting commissioned by the Conceptionist Order presents its founder, Beatriz de Silva, in a symbolic iconography that shows her as the trunk of a kind of fertile female Jesse Tree which extends its branches. Nevertheless, if we pay attention to its roots, the complexity that usually carries the path toward the hagiographic construction is evinced, where materials from different origin come together, some of which manifest the reminscense of a common folklorical heritage. This is what happens with some of the central elements that are established in this case, from which a few can be ascertained in the diverse typological catalogues that classify the traditional materials, like the canonical index ATU (Aarne, Thompson and Uther) or the Motif-Index of Folk Literature by Stith Thompson.

Un significativo cuadro de la Orden Concepcionista presenta a su fundadora, Beatriz de Silva, en una iconografía simbólica que la muestra como tronco de una suerte de fecundo árbol de Jesé femenino, que extiende sus ramas. Pero si se presta atención a sus raíces, cobra evidencia la complejidad que suele suponer el camino hacia la construcción hagiográfica, en el que confluyen materiales de diversa procedencia, algunos de los cuales manifiestan la reminiscencia de un acervo folclórico común. Así sucede con algunos de los elementos centrales que se establecen en este caso, no pocos de los cuales pueden rastrearse en los diversos catálogos tipológicos que clasifican el material tradicional, como el canónico Índice ATU (Aarne, Thompson y Uther) o el Motif-Index of Folk Literature de Stith Thompson.
