Asistencia social y cofradías en el Antiguo Régimen. Historiografía, líneas de investigación y perspectivas

Abstract

La promoción del culto público fue la principal tarea que las cofradías y hermandades practicaron durante el Antiguo Régimen. Pero, por otra parte, muchas optaron, en una sociedad con abundantes necesidades materiales y espirituales, por ejercer una labor caritativa y asistencial. Esta respuesta ante la pobreza se consagró, de forma especial desde la Contrarreforma, como una vía capital para la salvación del hombre. El presente artículo pretende analizar este fenómeno a través de una revisión historiográfica desde el siglo XIX, pasando por los años 70, cuando la cuestión suscitó un interés inusitado, parejo a la apertura de nuevas perspectivas. Finalmente, nos detendremos en la presentación de algunas de las parcelas que aun suponen un reto para todos los investigadores dispuestos a seguir reflexionando sobre estas cuestiones.

The promotion of the public cult was the main task that brotherhoods carried out during the Ancien Regime. However, in a society with plenty of material and spiritual needs, many brotherhoods chose to perform a charitable and social work. This answer in the presence of such poverty was established, especially since the Counter-Reformation, as a prime way for the salvation of the man. The current article expects to analyze this phenomenon through a revision of the historiography since the XIX century, by way of the 70’s, when the issue aroused an unusual interest, while new perspectives started. Finally, some areas that are still a challenge to all researchers willing to think about these matters, will be analyzed.
