The thesis defended by the author in this article affirms that the present western world is characterized by an authoritarianism joined to an impotence to create. Totalitarianism is expressed, first, at the political level, in the form of a "democratic authoritarianism" and, secondly, at the level of culture as a way of life and worldview ("cultural or civilizational authoritarianism"). The essay justifies this thesis starting from the idea that a collective culture is characterized by its capacity to create itself. Such self-creative propensity is collapsed by blind mechanisms governing political structures and the world of life. A fundamental expression of this totalitarianism is the phenomenon of "fateful continuity", consisting of a holding of time in a continuous present without past and without future. The fateful continuity is a "pathology of civilization" and the author clarifies it by reference to studies developed by psychiatric phenomenology or existential analysis. The author argues that the pathologies of civilization should not be understood as binary or dualistic oppositions between "normal" and "abnormal". Pathology is a phenomenon characterized by "autophagy", by virtue of which an entire sociocultural behavior or movement denies itself in its own development. The pathology of "fateful continuity" produces, in turn, a paranoid effect in the whole background of culture, a horror of reality that, in turn, forces individuals and the community to project their Self-realization of "imaginary" form ("fictionalization of the world"). Throughout this journey, the article links current "democratic authoritarianism", "cultural authoritarianism" and "paranoid culture" with the impossibility of experiencing the tragic in existence and with the production of intense suffering expressed in individuals but not reducible to them. Such suffering is what characterizes "malaise in the culture" and its "Organization of the vacuum"es_ES
