Los hábitos lectores en inglés de futuros maestros: Implicaciones didácticas

Abstract

Se presenta un estudio exploratorio y descriptivo sobre los hábitos lectores en inglés de estudiantes universitarios españoles para detectar cuáles son las áreas de atención prioritaria para poder seguir un Grado en inglés según el EEES. Se midió el nivel de inglés mediante el Oxford Online Placement Test. Se evaluaron los hábitos lectores y el tipo de materiales académicos que los estudiantes leen en inglés mediante un cuestionario. Gran parte de la muestra se encontraba en los niveles elementales e intermedios de dominio del inglés. Un porcentaje muy elevado de estudiantes declaró no tener el hábito de leer en inglés y leer solo materiales académicos obligatorios. Sin embargo, existe una fuerte correlación entre tener un nivel alto de dominio del inglés y tener el hábito de lectura y/o leer otros materiales no obligatorios. Por tanto, la enseñanza del inglés debería fomentar más la lectura y el hábito lector.

We present an exploratory and descriptive study about Spanish university students’ reading habits in English. The aim is to evaluate their difficulties to study a degree in English, according to the EHEA. English proficiency was tested by means of the Oxford Online Placement Test. A questionnaire was also used to evaluate students’ reading habits in English and the academic material they usually read. Most of the participants were in the elementary or intermediate English proficiency levels. A high percentage of students stated that they were not in the habit of reading in English and they only read compulsory academic materials. However, there was a strong correlation between having a high English proficiency level, reading habits and/or reading other noncompulsory materials. Therefore, English teaching methods should foster reading and improve reading habits.
