Uruguay como país de partida, España como destino: análisis de cambios y continuidades en la migración uruguaya

Abstract

La emigración es una característica estructural de la sociedad uruguaya que se agudiza en tiempos de crisis. Se estima que actualmente cerca del 16% de los uruguayos residen fuera de su territorio. España ha sido uno de los principales receptores de esta emigración. En los últimos cuarenta años encontramos dos importantes flujos migratorios hacia España: el primero en la década de los setenta y elsegundo a partir del año 2002. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar las similitudes y diferencias entre estos dos flujos. Reflexionamos sobre las causas económicas y políticas que determinaron el contexto específico en el que estos flujos se produjeron y analizamos las características del exilio y de la migración uruguaya reciente en España así como el desarrollo de órganos de representación y de asociaciones que vinculan a los exiliados y a los migrantes en función de su pertenencia nacional.

Emigration has been a structural trend in Uruguay. The outflows always have significant increases during the periods of crises. Emigration may be considered as an important response of Uruguayan population to adverse circumstances. Some authors estimate that 16% percent of the Uruguayan population lives abroad. Spain constitutes the main pole of attraction for Uruguayan emigration. In the last forty years there were two important and different flows to Spain: the first in the seventies and the second, recently since 2002. The aim of this paper is to analyse the similarity and the differences between those flows, the economic and political causes of the specific context of origin and the main characteristics of the exile and of the recent Uruguayan migration to Spain. I also analyse the development of associative movements that links Uruguayan migrants and exiles in relation to their national belonging.
