Granada's historical centre is a synthesis between the Ancien Regimen's city, unwilling to disappear and made by the alarifes (municipal architects), who perpetuate it through poor imitations, and the commendable alterations of the romantic architects, trained in Fine Arts and more inclined to demolition. It is a confrontation between picturesqueness and neoclassicism that gives rise to admiration as much as hostility, both due to the same reason: the collapse of the monumental and urban patrimony. The study addresses the recognition and protection of a twentieth century´s modern movement heritage, as is the case of Caracas’ City University, headquarters of the Venezuela’s Central University, which boasted the National Historic Monument recognition in 1994, ratifying this statement in 1998, and finally in 2000, when it was incorporated into the UNESCO World Heritage List. Our purpose is contributing to the preservation of this cultural legacy and to publicize some of its history, taking into consideration the historical events that led it to its assessment and protection, and finally to its achievement of a World Heritage listed property’s status. To bear in mind the defence of Numancia, as late as the early twenty-first century, is simply disheartening, if not, outrageous. Amazingly, we have to defend the obvious. Nevertheless, this is the situation prompted by the Castilla y Leon Government and the Soria and Garray city councils initiatives. Nowadays it is not the Roman legions, but a new iron, glass and concrete siege that threatens Numancia. Three massive urban plans projected in its environment will permanently alter a unique archaeological, historical, literary and natural heritage. [1]
