Malas Hierbas: un libro de artista sobre botánica en femenino

Abstract

Este Trabajo de Fin de Máster investiga la intersección entre arte, botánica y feminismo, analizando la relación histórica y simbólica entre mujeres y naturaleza. Estudia la evolución del concepto de “herbario” y su reinterpretación en el ámbito artístico, así como el papel de las mujeres en la botánica y su representación en el arte. Examina cómo la historiografía ha invisibilizado sus aportaciones en disciplinas como la ciencia, la literatura y las artes, generando un diálogo con enfoques feministas que buscan poner en valor su legado.

Desde el terreno práctico, esta investigación se materializa en la creación del libro de artista "Malas Hierbas". La obra vincula diez especies de plantas consideradas malas hierbas con mujeres relevantes en la botánica, estableciendo conexiones visuales y conceptuales entre ambas. A través de la ilustración botánica y el uso de técnicas gráficas, diseñamos un libro-acordeón en el que la relación entre forma y contenido refuerza su discurso. Las raíces de diferentes “malas hierbas”, representadas mediante troquelados, funcionan como metáfora de la resistencia y la memoria, mientras que la incorporación de semillas invita a una acción participativa que resignifica el papel de estas especies.

Este proyecto no solo plantea una reflexión sobre la botánica desde una perspectiva artística, sino que también sirve como un ejercicio de recuperación y reivindicación de mujeres cuyo trabajo ha sido marginado o invisibilizado.

This Master´s Thesis researches the intersection of art, botany and feminism, analysing the historical and symbolic relationship between women and nature. It studies the evolution of the notion of “herbarium” and its reinterpretation in the artistic field, as well as the role of women in botany and its representation in art. It examines how Historiography has disregarded their contributions to science, literature and arts, establishing a dialogue with feminist perspectives that aim to highlight the value of their legacy.

In the practical area, this research materialises in the creation of the artist’s book Weeds. The piece links ten species of plants considered weeds with women relevant in botany, generating visual and conceptual connections between them. Through botanical illustration and the use of graphic techniques, we design a leporello book in which the relationship between shape and content reinforces the discourse. The roots of different weeds represented by die cutting function as a metaphor of the resistance and the memory, whereas the incorporation of seeds invites to a participative action that redefines the consideration of these species.

This project not only sets out a reflection upon botany from an artistic perspective, but also serves as a recovery and reclamation of women whose work has been marginalised or overlooked.
