For a Refoundation of Modern Architecture: Metron in the First Years (1945- 1948)

Abstract

La inmediata posguerra italiana fue una época en la que todas las energías intelectuales se volcaron hacia el esfuerzo de la reconstrucción. Metron, la primera revista internacional de arquitectura fundada en 1945, presenta una variedad de contenidos históricos influidos por distintas contaminaciones culturales y abiertos a múltiples lecturas. Aunque numerosos investigadores la utilizan como fuente documental, Metron ha sido poco investigada en su papel de poliédrica herramienta ideológica. El presente artículo se centra en algunos de los temas de debate (urbanismo, vivienda y prefabricación, tendencia orgánica de la arquitectura) que configuraron de forma significativa el clima cultural de la revista en los años comprendidos entre 1945 y 1948, comparando las diferentes posturas de los autores y explorando la forma en la que la arquitectura moderna fue transmitida e influyó en su recepción al preparar el terreno para la crítica operativa.

The immediate postwar period in Italy was a time when all the intellectual energies were involved in the rebuilding effort. Metron, the first international architectural journal founded in 1945, represents a variety of historic contents susceptible to different cultural influences and open to multiple readings. Despite the numerous researchers that have used it as a documentary source, Metron’s role as a multifaceted ideological tool has been investigated little. This paper focuses on the main subjects for debate (urbanism, housing and prefabrication, organic trend of architecture) that significantly shaped the cultural climate of the journal in the years between 1945 and 1948, comparing different positions of the authors and exploring the way to convey modern architecture and to influence its reception preparing the ground for operative criticism.
