La Vega de Granada: The Defence of a Paradigmatic Agrarian Heritage Space by Local Citizens

Abstract

La Vega de Granada es un espacio agrario con importantes valores patrimoniales. Al pertenecer al Área Metropolitana de Granada, se ve afectada por los conflictos de los espacios agrarios periurbanos. Sin embargo, la ciudadanía activa ha desarrollado varias acciones y proyectos en las últimas décadas para proteger y mejorar esta zona y sus valores patrimoniales. Dentro de este proceso democrático, libre e independiente, en este trabajo nos centramos en la propuesta de declaración de la Vega como Bien de Interés Cultural (Bien de Interés Cultural, el nivel más alto de protección que otorga la legislación española a un bien cultural). Esta propuesta consideraba explícitamente a la Vega como parte del patrimonio histórico de Andalucía y se basaba en los principios de un nuevo concepto conocido como Patrimonio Agrario. También observamos cómo la población local continúa o recupera la coevolución gradual y sostenible de la sociedad humana y el ecosistema agrícola en la Vega adaptando las reglas de funcionamiento que le han permitido sobrevivir a las demandas del siglo XXI. Iniciativas recientes interesantes en esta dirección incluyen la producción, venta y consumo de bienes producidos localmente como caminos fundamentales hacia la reconstrucción participativa de la Vega.

The Vega of Granada is an agrarian space with important heritage values. As it belongs to the Metropolitan Area of Granada, it is affected by the conflicts of periurban agrarian spaces. However, the active citizenship has developed several actions and projects in the past decades to protect and enhance this area and its heritage values. Within this democratic, free, and independent process, in this paper we focus on the proposal for the declaration of the Vega as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest – the highest level of protection granted under Spanish Law to a cultural asset). This proposal explicitly viewed the Vega as part of Andalusia’s historic heritage and was based on the principles of a new concept known as Agrarian Heritage. We also look at how local people continue or recover the gradual sustainable coevolution of human society and the agricultural ecosystem in the Vega by adapting the rules of operation that have enabled it to survive the demands of the twenty-first century. Recent interesting initiatives in this direction include the production, sale, and consumption of locally produced goods as fundamental paths towards the participative reconstruction of the Vega.
