Fernando Arrabal en la escena española

Abstract

Fernando Arrabal es uno de los dramaturgos más representados en el mundo durante el siglo XX, pero menos conocido en su país. Una de las causas principales que provocó esta situación fue el excesivo control que ejerció la censura franquista sobre su obra y su persona. Por tanto, con la presente tesis doctoral pretendemos colaborar en la recuperación de este autor tan importante para la evolución del teatro nacional. Igualmente, intentamos acercarlo al espectador medio de teatro actual que apenas tiene conocimientos sobre él más allá de las diversas polémicas en las que se ha visto envuelto a lo largo de su trayectoria profesional. Para lograr este objetivo, hemos comenzado este trabajo contextualizando al autor y su obra. Por ello, planteamos un marco teórico sobre la situación histórica y teatral de España entre los años 30 y 90 del siglo XX. Seguidamente, describimos de forma detallada la biografía y las características de la producción teatral de Arrabal. Así mismo, hemos establecido los rasgos clave de la censura y de la crítica teatral haciendo hincapié en los periódicos y revistas más destacados. De esta forma, recogemos las noticias, reportajes y críticas publicadas sobre su producción teatral, lo cual nos ha permitido estudiar cómo fue la recepción de su obra en España. Finalmente, con todo ello, analizamos semióticamente las puestas en escena de varias de sus obras que fueron representadas en el país entre el siglo XX y XXI, las cuales han quedado grabadas y están disponibles online. Sin duda, este apartado final es la gran innovación de esta tesis doctoral, ya que hasta el momento los estudios que profundizan en este aspecto son escasos a pesar de ser imprescindibles para comprender de forma plena una obra teatral.

Fernando Arrabal is one of the most performed playwrights in the world during the 20th century, but less known in his own country. One of the main reasons for this situation was the excessive control exercised by Franco's censorship over his work and his person. Therefore, the aim of this doctoral thesis is to collaborate in the recovery of this author, so important for the evolution of national theater. Likewise, we try to bring him closer to the average spectator of theater today who has hardly any knowledge of him beyond the various controversies in which he has been involved throughout his professional career. To achieve this objective, this work began by contextualizing the author and his work. To this end, it is necessary to set out a theoretical framework on the historical and theatrical situation in Spain between the 1930s and the 1990s. We have then described in detail the biography and characteristics of Arrabal's theatrical production and also developed the key features of censorship and theatrical criticism, with emphasis on the most important newspapers and magazines. In this way, the main point to understand the topic is to have been able to collect the news, reports and reviews published on his theatrical production, which has allowed us to study the reception of his work in Spain. Finally, with all this, analyzed semiotically the stagings of several of his plays that were performed in the country between the 20th and 21st centuries, which have been recorded and are available online. Undoubtedly, this final section is the great innovation of this doctoral thesis, since so far studies that delve into this aspect are scarce, although they are essential to fully understand a theatrical work.
