RESUMEN
Se inicia con un breve repaso de las ilustraciones en los libros durante las últimas centurias. Nos remontaremos a los códices medievales, si bien no se debe perder de vista el rol jugado por los dibujos y las propias ilustraciones en la transmisión literaria e histórica y religiosa de los papiros, pliegos, libros, murales, etc., en el que en muchos casos van mucho más allá de la ilustración, siendo en realidad estos dibujos los que son el lenguaje comunicativo existente. Los jeroglíficos nos pueden acercar a esa idea, al igual que los ideogramas, pudiendo significar en muchos casos el inicio de la escritura fonética cuando aparecen dibujos que derivarían en letras y que traducen a otra lengua los significados de lo representado.
