Biochemical sensors with optical response are widely used in fields such as medicine, food safety and environment. The possibility of implementing porta-ble systems that are able to perform in-situ analysis is a very relevant line of research in recent years. For this reason, the use of smartphones as reliable and low-cost detection devices has recently attracted attention. However, the influ-ence of lighting conditions and the low sensitivity of low-cost devices remain fundamental aspects to improve in this field.
This thesis will focus on the development of image processing algorithms of biochemical sensors with optical response for implementation on mobile devices. One of the lines of this research is the use of microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (pPAD) with Quick Response (QR) codes. This synergy will allow the implementation of detectors that use QR code detection algorithms to measure device signal. This thesis studies the use of error coding of a QR code for the detection of colorimetric signals in it. Additionally, a system is implemented for detecting glucose and lactate concentrations in a QR code-based biosensor that is capable of correcting changes in luminosity in the measurement. Another relevant objective is the study of chemical sensors with a fluorimetric response. For this reason, an image processing algorithm is developed for detection fluo-rescence intensity in a pPAD that is implemented on a smartphone. Finally, a mobile application capable of detecting fluorescent QR codes developed for de-termining the cyanide concentration is shown.
In summary, this work highlights the promising possibilities of mobile devices as optical biosensor detection tools.
