For years there was an intense debate on the trade of Cádiz at the end of the 18th century
and the beginning of the 19th century. While some authors affirmed the commercial collapse, others
have qualified and revised this thesis by proposing that it was a process of gradual adaptation until
1820. This article aims to offer a different perspective through the analysis of six family trajectories
(Ágreda, Gargollo, González Nandín, Izquierdo, Retortillo and Rábago) and its objective is to analyse
the accommodation strategies of these relatives, and thus to verify microscopically to what extent
there was a true collapse of trade, or if, on the contrary, mechanisms were deployed to prolong and
maintain the activity mercantile and financial.
