«Sibilla he stimatta la più bella et più nobile città de tutta Spagna». Una visión italiana de la jerarquía urbana castellana a principios del siglo XVI

Abstract

Este capítulo analiza la información sobre la Corona de Castilla reunida en 1519 por un mercader milanés anónimo en su diario de viaje, una fuente valiosa por el área cubierta. Efectivamente, el autor se desplazó a lo largo del Camino de Santiago en el norte, continuó por el centro (Castilla la Vieja y Castilla la Nueva) y finalizó por el sur (reino de Granada, valle del Guadalquivir), una ruta que le permitió apreciar con gran detalle el paisaje urbano castellano, poniendo por escrito impresiones muy desarrolladas sobre las dimensiones, las infraestructuras, las principales edificaciones, servicios, actividades económicas y costumbres de las ciudades, villas y aldeas visitadas. En conclusión, emerge una imagen muy completa de la articulación del poblamiento y sus comunicaciones, así como la importancia y la jerarquía de la organización urbana.

The present book chapter analyses the information on the Crown of Castile gathered in 1519 by a Milanese anonymous merchant in his travel diary, a valuable source because of the area covered. Indeed the author moved through St. James’ Way in the north, continued through the centre (both the Old and the New Castile) and finished in the south (the Kingdom of Granada, the Guadalquivir valley), a route that allowed him to appreciate with great detail the Castilian urban landscape, writing down highly developed impressions on the dimension, infrastructures, main buildings, services, economic activities and customs of the cities, towns and villages visited. In conclusion it emerges a very complete image of the settlement’s articulation and the communications, as well as their importance and hierarchy in the urban organisation.
