The objective of the present study was to analyze the factors that contribute
to the intention of ageing in place, in people aged 50 years and over, who
live in their homes, in Portugal. Data were collected through an adaptation of
the questionnaire by Ahn, Kang, and Kwon (2020) for the Portuguese
context. The sample consisted of 256 individuals, aged between 50 and 98
years. The results obtained were analyzed based on the Theory of Planned
Behavior model (Ajzen, 1991) and indicate that the subjective norm and
perceived behavioral control components play a significant role for the
intention of aging in place. The relational dimension also proved to have a
good predictive value of the intention of aging in place, especially in terms of
the social/community relationship dimension. Despite the exploratory nature
of the study results allow reflection on the most valued aspects in the
intention of aging in place with a Portuguese sample. The results allow us to
identify the most significant predictors of people's intention to continue to
age in their homes and communities.
