La presente invención proporciona el uso de ciertas
poliaminas acíclicas simples de la fórmula (1), unidas
a heterociclos, para el tratamiento de leishmaniasis.
Los compuestos estudiados muestran todos ellos
actividad antiparasitaria contra especies de
Leishmania, comparable o superior a la del principio
activo del fármaco comúnmente utilizado para tratar
esta enfermedad, pero con una toxicidad para
macrófagos semejante o, en la mayor parte de los
casos, inferior a la del compuesto comercial de
referencia, y con índices de selectividad superiores
frente a cepas representativas de las tres formas
clínicas de la enfermedad: cutánea, mucocutánea y
visceral. Los compuestos muestran capacidad de
inhibición de la superóxido dismutasa del parásito, en
general a concentraciones inferiores a las necesarias
para inhibir la superóxido dismutasa humana. Todo
ello apoya su utilidad para tratar leishmaniasis
