No obstante, algunos
proceso totalmente autodirigido y voluntario.
UNILECTIO has intended to generate good practices to foster the habit of reading and build the basis of intertextuality
among students in different academic years in both the Degree in Early Childhood Education and the Degree in
Primary Education at Granada campus (including its affiliated centre) and Ceuta and Melilla. UNILECTIO also aims at
completing the philological training of the students of the Master’s Degree in Secondary Education, specialised in
Spanish Language and Literature at the University of Granada. UNILECTIO starts from the premise that, as future
teachers, the former are expected to have as a professional competence the skill to encourage the habit of reading in
students aged 0-12, which requires to be active readers themselves to successfully perform as enhancers. The latter,
already philologists, need supplementary training in the Graduate programme that prepares them as reading
facilitators for students aged 13-16.
This project has been conducted by an interdisciplinary team, involving the departments of Spanish Language and
Literature Didactics, the Social Science Didactics, the Experimental Science Didactics, Inorganic Chemistry and
Mathematics Didactics, in Specific Didactics courses in all the three campuses of the University of Granada. The
project has also counted on the University of Granada Library’s collaboration through its campuses libraries.
Based on a methodological action research, the project has offered four itineraries compound by Spanish and
Universal Literature works, whose contents are not only linked to literary motifs, but also related to other areas of
their syllabus, such as History, Mathematics and Science.
The students have selected those books they wanted to read, according to their likings or personal interests, and then
they have promoted and disseminated them, not only in the academic environment among their peers, but also in an
educational and social sense through the organisation of presentations, the use of ICT, mass media, social
networks…spreading knowledge and developed materials in order to make them useful and applicable in other
contexts.
At the same time, the students have reached the compromise to finish the readings included in the given itineraries
as to make the project tenable; and a Book Club has been created in collaboration with the Educational Program of
the Vice-rectorate of University Expansion and Heritage of the University of Granada aimed at students enrolled in the
centres, but who are not partaking in those courses. All the of the above has led to intra and interdepartamental
coordination as well as intercampus collaboration.
In terms of achievements, it is possible to state that, for the first time in these campuses, an interdisciplinary team
has been formed by expert teachers, united by the same concern: working on good reading practices aimed at
university students in order to help them create a habit of reading. Given that scientific literature (Chartier, 2004;
Elche, Sánchez-García and Yubero, 2019; Granado, Puig and Romero, 2011; Larrañaga, Yubero and Cerrillo, 2008;
Vélez and Rapetti, 2008) and the previous results obtained in exploratory studies conducted by the coordinator and
one of the members of the team since the academic year 2017-2018 (del Moral and Molina, 2018; Molina and del
Moral, 2019) severe scarcity of literary competence has been detected, unachieved in pre-university stages. Precisely,
the reading itineraries that have been offered follow the students’ likings, preferences and interests; and also they
have used the diversity of genres (novel, short story, essay, poetru, drama, graphic novel, memoirs…), the update and
broadness of their topics, and gender perspective as variables to take into account in the elaboration of the
itineraries. To this end, the team had investigated different bibliographic sources and statistical data studies.
Some of the advances in the results have been disseminated in congresses, conferences and scientific meetings, as
detailed in section E of this report.
Moreover, on the one hand, it is also considered an achievement that those students involved have signed a
compromise (compromiso lector) to guarantee that they will try to keep reading the books comprised in the itineraries
to discover new readings and to consolidate this habit of reading. Additionaly, some students have expressed that,
after reading some books included in the project, they have come to search complementary books related to the
subject to read them as well. Thus, it is also observable an emerging habit of reading or, at least, curiosity about
finding new texts to read for pleasure.
On the other hand, it is also considered an achievement that the students have been able to create themselves
material that have pushed them to search information and to deepen in the works and the authors in a self-managed
and voluntary process. At the same time, this brand new knowledge has been transferred and presented to the
academic field, but also to the society, allowing the students to develop personal, academic and professional
competences, as explained in section D.
As an overall conclusion, the students have stated in the specifically designed assessment questionnaire for the project that the experience must continue because UNILECTIO has granted them another perspective into reading,
has prompted the exploration of other genres beforehand unknown for them, as well as it has brought them closer to
understanding the relation between texts and present events and that they are willing to deepen further into that.
Regarding the teachers, they consider that these synergies must be continued and institutionalised in everyday teaching
practice.
