Claude Lévi-Strauss. Vida, obra y legado de un antropólogo centenario

Abstract

Celebrado el centenario del autor en noviembre de 2008, y reciente su muerte a fines de octubre de 2009, parece oportuno dedicar unas páginas a esbozar una semblanza personal e intelectual del gran antropólogo Claude Lévi-Strauss. El artículo sigue el rastro a las huellas de una vida de investigador entregado, señalando los principales hitos y algunas de sus posiciones teóricas más significativas. Reseña también el legado del autor, en el que hay que inventariar el conjunto ya clásico de sus obras, donde destacan las facetas del gran antropólogo fundador del estructuralismo, el gran escritor que mereció ingresar en la Academia Francesa y el gran pensador que nos incita a ir más allá de las apariencias. Evocaré la metodología del análisis estructural del que fue maestro, pese a las limitaciones que el paso del tiempo haya desvelado, para reconocer finalmente el desafío que Lévi-Strauss sigue lanzando a quienes nos preocupamos por entender la realidad humana: que las ciencias sociales y humanas han de avanzar hacia una mayor cientificidad.

With the centenary of the author celebrated in 2008, and with his recent death in October 2009, it seems fitting to devote a few pages to sketch the personality and intellect of the great anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss. The article follows the tracks of the life of this dedicated researcher, pointing out the main landmarks and some of his most significant theoretic positions. It also highlights the legacy of the author, in which the whole of his now classical works must be counted, underlining certain facets of the great anthropologist who founded structuralism, the great writer who deserved to be included in the French Academy, and the great thinker who incites us to go beyond appearances. I will probe the methodology of the structural analysis of which he was master, despite whatever limitations that the passage of time has revealed, to recognize finally the challenge that Lévi-Strauss continues to pose to any of us who should trouble ourselves to understand human reality: that the social and human sciences need to push forward to greater scientific rigour.
