En esta tesis se quiere mostrar que la idea del colombiano básicamente consiste en la
siguiente narrativa: el hombre moderno-democrático es autónomo. No necesita de Dios
como principio del mundo, dado que en nuestra época todo se funda en la razón y en la
voluntad humanas. Para Gómez Dávila, eso significa que el hombre ha asumido el
papel de Dios: es el mesías (es decir, el redentor de su miseria), el soberano y el creador
de los valores. El pueblo se da a sí mismo sus leyes sin que Dios intervenga; las ciencias
explican el mundo sin que Dios sea necesario; el pensamiento mismo se funda
únicamente en la razón humana. La modernidad crea un reino del hombre donde su
voluntad es suprema. Si Dios existe es meramente como observador o como un ente con
el que solo tenemos una relación privada. Esto es lo que Gómez Dávila llama
antropoteísmo. Pero justo porque el hombre no es Dios, falla en su empresa y se ve
atrapado en una casa de la desesperación, es decir, en una realidad fea, inútil y nihilista.
El objetivo principal de esta tesis es el de comprender y explicar la crítica a la
modernidad democrática en la obra de Nicolás Gómez Dávila, específicamente en
Textos y Escolios a un texto implícito.
