Investigación historiográfica orientada a recuperar saberes y conocimientos náuticos de América y Europa, vinculados con la navegación marítima atlántica desarrollada durante el siglo XVIII.
La justificación de trabajo se debió a los pocos estudios desarrollados en Colombia sobre este tópico, así como para estimular el reconocimiento y valoración de los documentos históricos como fuente de información única para el estudio de la historia de la navegación marítima. Se espera, que el escrito sirva para construir nuevas relaciones de identidad con el mar, así como para consolidar el campo del patrimonio marítimo Iberoamericano.
Como marco espacial se focalizó la búsqueda de información y contextualización histórica para la zona litoral y marítima caribeña del virreinato del Nuevo Reino de Granada (entidad político administrativa de la monarquía hispánica) específicamente, en su provincia del Darién y el apostadero de Cartagena de Indias. Metodológicamente la investigación implicó la localización, consulta y análisis de un variado conjunto de documentación histórica, cartográfica y literatura especializada salvaguardada en archivos y bibliotecas de Colombia y España.
La investigación desarrollada permitió el logro de varios resultados. Uno de ellos, está asociado con la creación de un primer balance historiográfico para determinar ¿Cómo se ha contado la historia de la navegación marítima en Colombia? Otro, fue la documentación exhaustiva, acompañada de un análisis náutico de: a) las expediciones militares y navales españolas de 1761, 1785 y 1787 efectuadas en la provincia del Darién y, b) la creación de la historia de vida del piloto y militar español Don Juan Antonio Ferro y Fonseca (1751-182?). Un resultado más, corresponde a las transcripciones de los diarios de campaña y cartografía oficial de las expediciones del Darién, elaboradas por su comandante Don Antonio de Arévalo, y la documentación oficial, náutica y cartográfica vinculada con el piloto Ferro.
Como corolario fue posible presentar una serie de conocimientos, técnicas y tradiciones náuticas de la época, incluyendo la de la etnia Cuna, que invitan a re-pensar la navegación marítima atlántica en América como una actividad mestiza.
