Jacob y el otro: una lectura desde el deseo mimético

Abstract

El artículo propone el análisis del cuento de Juan Carlos Onetti “Jacob y el otro” a partir de la teoría antropológica de René Girard. Así, el universo de Onetti aparece configurado por distintos aspectos del llamado “deseo mimético”. Este concepto determina que las relaciones de deseo entre un sujeto y un objeto no se establecen de forma directa, sino a través de un juego triangular formado por un sujeto, un modelo y un objeto. Al objeto se llega a través del modelo, a quien Girard denomina mediador. En este trabajo sólo pretendo comentar algunos elementos de esta teoría en relación con el principal triángulo de deseos de este relato, compuesto por Jacob, su manager Orsini y el objetivo patético de sentirse el mejor luchador del mundo.

The article analyses “Jacob y el otro”, short story by Juan Carlos Onetti according to anthropological tehories of René Girard. Onetti’s universe brims with different aspects of mimetic desire: This means that the relationship between the subject and the object is not direct: there is always a triangular relationship of subject, model, and object. Through the object, one is drawn to the model, whom Girard calls the mediator: it is in fact the model who is sought. My intention is only to comment some aspects of this theory in relation with the main triangle of desire in this story, which it is composed by Jacob, his manager Orsini and his pathetic objective of feeling himself the best wrestler in the World.
