El texto devoto en el antiguo régimen: el laberinto de la consolación

Abstract

En contraste con el rigor y la erudición de los libros espirituales de teólogos y doctores, limitados necesariamente en su alcance por la exigencia de una elevada preparación para su lectura, el género menor del libro de devoción, muy extendido en el Antiguo Régimen, presenta una enorme influencia en el conjunto social, desde su misma identificación con rasgos y comportamientos estereotipados. A partir del examen de algunos textos principales, seleccionados entre los distintos subgéneros de la literatura devocional de la época, se analizan los recursos característicos de esta manifestación de la cultura religiosa y sus implicaciones psicológicas en un público lector extraordinariamente amplio

In contrast with the rigor and erudition of the spiritual books of doctors and theologians, which, because they require such a high level of preparation on the part of the reader, have a necessarily limited readership, the lesser genre of the prayer book, very popular throughout Spain’s Old Regime (16th-17th century) has a great social impact stemming from its means of identification with stereotyped traits and behaviors. A selection of prayerbook texts of this period are studied in order to analyze the characteristics of this type of religious literature as well as to infer its psychological implications for the extremely broad sector of society that it reached.
