Esta tesis plantea una revisión crítica y conceptual de las principales relaciones que la Arquitectura ha establecido con la Meteorología para poner el acento en las continuas transferencias, en sus nu¬merosos lugares y fenómenos comunes y en un sujeto que habita tanto en la tierra como bajo el cielo. Un cielo constituido por aire, material físico y simbólico de las que ambas se nutren sin ser exclusivo ni de una ni de otra. Un aire que, respirado por el hombre, convierte la atmósfera, de la arquitectura y de la meteorología, en un envolvente e integrador paisaje compartido. La investigación aquí presentada entiende la Atmósfera como un paisaje que abarca un amplio e integrador territorio que vincula ciencia y arte, fenómeno y experiencia, espacio y tiempo. Un paisaje “construido”, artificialmente modificado, intencionadamente o no, por la sociedad en su habitar en el mundo. El medio atmosférico es analizado por un arquitecto por lo que es sutilmente distinto al objeto de estudio del meteorólogo ya que, como tal paisaje, se presenta ineludiblemente ligado a la mirada que realiza el hombre sobre ella y por tanto a su dimensión subjetiva, cultural e histórica. La atmósfera es un paisaje percibido, sentido, respirado; un paisaje al que el sujeto se incorpora física, fisiológica y emocionalmente.
Para ello se propone una conversación cruzada en torno a una serie de conceptos fundamentales para la ciencia del aire y que igualmente lo son para aquella que trabaja con el espacio habitado por el hombre. Se ha tratado de mostrar las sugerentes e insospechadas relaciones entre dos “especialidades” que han estado mucho más cerca de lo que hemos creído. Desde los aspectos científicos y técnicos a otros estéticos y culturales, la historia de la arquitectura se superpondrá a la de la meteorología para mostrar la importante influencia que el fenómeno atmosférico ha ejercido en el proyecto y en la experiencia de la arquitectura a lo largo del tiempo. Es en este contexto en el que una sensibilidad meteorológica, es decir, atenta al aire, puede descubrir nuevos paisajes y oportunidades para una arquitectura basada en la consolidación de las relaciones entre naturaleza, artificio y sociedad.
