En esta tesis doctoral se somete a prueba, a través del método comparativo, un conjunto de hipótesis sobre la posible persistencia de la cosmovisión mesoamericana en la actual celebración indígena mexicana de Días de Muertos y en el calendario del cual forma parte.
Para construir el punto de partida de la investigación, en la primera sección se revisa el contexto de producción de las hipótesis y se construye un diseño metodológico que permite someterlas a prueba. En esta misma sección se hace una primera comparación de la festividad indígena de Días de Muertos con sus contrapartes en la Península Ibérica, en la cultura mexica y en el área andina, para determinar la procedencia de los principales rasgos de la celebración observada en la comunidad de Hueyapan, Morelos, México.
En la segunda y tercera partes se someten a prueba las hipótesis referentes al calendario, por comparación del caso mexicano con sus contrapartes en la Península Ibérica, en el área andina y en la sociedad mexica.
En la cuarta parte se somete a prueba la hipótesis sobre la relación de los Días de Muertos con el calendario y sobre su significado. Al final de esta última sección se incluye un capítulo de conclusiones, donde se exponen los resultados obtenidos y algunas reflexiones finales.
