El trastorno por déficit de atención/hiperactividad (TDAH) es un trastorno neurológico frecuente en la edad adulta, pero escasamente detectado. La realización del diagnóstico requiere de pautas para la evaluación entre los que se encuentran la historia clínica del paciente acompañada de una entrevista retrospectiva de los síntomas en la infancia al sujeto y sus familiares y el uso de diferentes escalas de valoración del trastorno con el objetivo de revelar la existencia del problema con su consecuente diagnóstico o en su caso, la continuidad del mismo en la edad adulta. Por estos motivos, el diagnóstico preciso y a tiempo del TDAH adulto es un proceso fundamental para las personas afectadas, ya que supone la inclusión en un tratamiento efectivo adaptado a sus características que disminuya los efectos perjudiciales del trastorno sobre la persona.
