Abstract
En el presente trabajo se pretende profundizar
sobre algunos mecanismos de la sociedad romana, que posibilitaron el juicio y condena, en su caso, de las Vírgenes Vestales. Con ello se intenta comprobar hasta qué punto las funciones sociales y religiosas que desempeñaban, así como las normas a las que estaban sujetas eran expresión de algunas de las constantes que marcaban la vida de las mujeres
de la antigua Roma; hasta qué punto las Vestales constituían, por excelencia, un modelo ideal y abstracto en el que toda mujer romana debía reflejarse. Por ello me
centro, en particular, en el valor dado por la comunidad romana a la castidad/virginidad,
en su función ideológica, religiosa y política, y en las consecuencias que conllevaba su transgresión en el caso de las sacerdotisas de Vesta.
