Abstract
This paper presents some reflections on the expansion of the Portuguese language observed from the perspective of the Spanish context and the role of universities in the process. As a member of the Eurozone, the Iberian country suffered the consequences of the financial crisis that hit the world between 2008 and 2013, specifically as it saw the evolution of its internal process provoke the flight of young brains abroad and accelerate the internationalization of companies and universities. As one of the most preferred destinations was Brazil, this movement gave rise to a growth in interest in learning the Portuguese language and the various aspects of its culture. As a consequence, universities had their routines altered to meet the new needs of world agitation, not only due to the training of professionals for teaching Portuguese as a foreign language (PLE), but also to elaborate projects that would meet the current internationalization process and mobilization of researchers and students, in addition to the immigrant social public victims of successive events after the advent of globalization.
