Abstract

The traditional explanation for the use of the Slovak prepositions na and v with ablative for expressing spatial location is a solution for only this particular question. We propose an alternative that explains synthetically this one and other alternations: count / mass nouns, perfective / imperfective verbs. Their nexus rests on the lexical-semantic aspect, a set of contrasted theories saying that if on one hand have been applied to many chapters of the grammar, on the other hand have not been applied to the study of the use of the prepositions yet. To do so it is necessary to abandon the idea of explaining the use of the prepositions by means of characteristics in order to do it by means of relations.
