abstract = {Antonio  Ponz  became  interested  in  the  religious  question  during  his  visit  to 
England in 1783. He did not take the question of the freedom of worship seriously due 
to the fact that English laws discriminated against the Catholics. He failed to understand 
the  reasons  for  that  popular  antipathy  towards  a  minority  which  was  not  inherently 
dangerous. Some of his comments and opinions about the images in the churches make 
think that he was not qualified to understand English Catholicism},
