The main purpose of the present paper is to discuss the crucial role of teacher education in the enactment of learner autonomy in the foreign language classroom. In doing so, it advocates the development of a framework for teacher education aiming at fostering teacher autonomy, changing teachers’ beliefs about FLT, and implementing a case-based pedagogy towards a more learner-centred approach to language teaching.
