This paper presents, describes and analyzes the Official Urbanization Map of the Municipality of Santiago of 1939, conceived by the Austrian architect and urbanist Karl Brunner, but created by the Chilean architect Roberto Humeres. In this way, the paper has two objectives: first, to present the urban heritage dimension of the document, which has a value in and of itself; and secondly, to analyze the ideological and theoretical basis established by Brunner, in order to understand the representation as a form of knowledge. In this way, the paper is structured into four parts. In the first section a minimal context will be established in order to be able to understand the map as a document that summarizes the spirit of the time. Secondly, the map itself will be described, which is to say its material quality and use as support for a certain representation, characterized by the choice of scales (1:5,000 for the general map, and 1:1,000 for the 59 detailed sheets). In the third section, the project operations and kinds of interventions that the map proposes are identified: width of the streets, street corners, and the inside of blocks. In the fourth and final section, conclusions are reached that add to the interpretation of this unique map of Santiago, in search of keys that allow researchers to reveal the idea of a “modern city”, supposedly contained within the map. To our understanding, one of these consists in the fact that the map of 1939, through a significant economy in the use of graphic media, presents a tension between the existing city and the projected transformation, which is shown through an abstract form of representation. Through this work we seek to value urban cartography as a object of study, and simultaneously, recognize from the map itself the idea that drove the transformation of the city, as this transformation was based on this representation. 2021-01-19T07:31:48Z 2021-01-19T07:31:48Z 2015 info:eu-repo/semantics/conferenceObject Hidalgo, Germán y Wren Strabucchi.
