Pain is a confusing information we receive from our body when it tries to tell us that something is wrong. A word that can constitute both a sensation and an ensemble of complex and dissimilar relationships and meanings. What is pain, what do we understand by pain and how does it lead us to suffering (or vice versa), how have pain and suffering been presented and represented from Art? On the basis of these questions we have focused our research, carrying out a study of artistic works grouped around the Art of Action, since their substantial matter is closely linked to the body. From this premise we have set out to explore the vicissitudes of pain and suffering, starting from the possible causative agents and the different ways of facing it from the Art of action, structuring our research in what we have come to call narratives. Issues such as the limit, the abject, illness, conflict and beauty, are constituted as the argument thread, to observe the relationships established between the pain that can be generated from them and suggested reactions from the Art of action, to finally review, which are the current strategies from the Art of action to deal with pain and present the suffering of others. Hidden behind the skin. Representations of pain and suffering from Action Art, it supposes a revision of the Art of action generated since the seventies, focusing on actions where pain is present, observing the resources used to present it, the different ways of warning it and in what future line is being developed for the future. Firstly, with the analysis of works where there is absolute evidence of this relationship, visually and not without controversy when they occurred, scratching in the practices with masochistic and self-harmful dyes; but secondly and with a greater incidence, on those works where pain and suffering travel implicitly but metaphorically. Works that work are developed beyond the artist's own body, to be confused with other suffering bodies, in an effort of visibility and emancipation. 2018-07-30T07:44:32Z 2018-07-30T07:44:32Z 2018 2018-05-23 info:eu-repo/semantics/doctoralThesis Cano Martínez, María Jesús.
