La Compañía de Jesús y la Corte de Carlos II. Desde la caída de Nithard hasta el final del generalato de Juan Pablo Oliva (1669-1681)

Abstract

El presente capítulo de libro se configuró como una aproximación –desde las relaciones internacionales– a la influencia de la Compañía de Jesús en la Corte hispana desde la caída y exilio del jesuita Juan Everardo Nithard –confesor y valido de la reina regente Mariana de Austria– hasta el fallecimiento del general de la Compañía de Jesús, Juan Pablo Oliva, en 1681. Un personaje cuyas cualidades políticas fueron ensalzadas incluso por Luis XIV; que, durante su generalato, organizó en Madrid un verdadero negociado jesuita que, aprovechando la preponderancia cortesana de Nithard, consiguió innumerables ventajas para particulares y para la propia Orden ignaciana. Durante su última época al frente del gobierno romano de los jesuitas, Oliva tuvo que enfrentarse a la hostilidad hacia su Orden manifestada por Don Juan José de Austria; a que muchos jesuitas españoles se posicionaran abierta y peligrosamente contra el hijo bastardo de Felipe IV; a que la reina gobernadora dejara de tener confesor jesuita durante el resto de su regencia; o a que destacados jesuitas se pusieran del lado francés durante la revuelta antiespañola de Messina. Su objetivo principal, claramente novedoso, fue presentar el relativo eclipse de la influencia de los jesuitas en Madrid tras la caída de Nithard, la búsqueda de nuevos aliados políticos por el padre Oliva entre quienes renegaban de la presencia de Don Juan José en el gobierno de la Monarquía y la recuperación de la preponderancia de los jesuitas a partir de 1679.

This book chapter was configured as an approach – from international relations – to the influence of the Society of Jesus in the Hispanic Court since the fall and exile of the Jesuit Juan Everardo Nithard – confessor and valid of the queen regent Mariana of Austria – until the death of the general of the Society of Jesus, Juan Pablo Oliva, in 1681. A character whose political qualities were praised even by Louis XIV; who, during his generalship, organized in Madrid a true Jesuit business office that, taking advantage of Nithard's courtly preponderance, achieved innumerable advantages for individuals and for the Ignatian Order itself. During his last time at the head of the Roman government of the Jesuits, Oliva had to face the hostility towards his Order expressed by Don Juan José of Austria; to many Spanish Jesuits taking a position openly and dangerously against the bastard son of Philip IV; for the queen governor to no longer have a Jesuit confessor during the rest of her regency; or that prominent Jesuits took the French side during the anti-Spanish revolt in Messina. Its main objective, clearly novel, was to present the relative eclipse of the influence of the Jesuits in Madrid after the fall of Nithard, the search for new political allies by Father Oliva among those who denied the presence of Don Juan José in the government of the Monarchy and the recovery of the preponderance of the Jesuits from 1679.
