Salidas Profesionales de los Traductores e Intérpretes en los Ámbitos del Comercio Exterior y las Relaciones Internacionales

Abstract

Introduction: Students of translation and interpreting who intend to find a place in the labor market are often unaware of the realities of how it works. It is therefore necessary for them to receive professional guidance during their academic preparation. For this reason, in the subject "The Translator and Interpreter's Profession", taught in the last year of the Degree in Translation and Interpreting at the University of Granada, during the 2023/2024 academic year, students carried out fieldwork in which they interviewed professionals from different areas. Methodology: This paper presents a comparative analysis of interviews with four international commerce professionals trained in translation and interpreting, and four other professionals in the field of international relations. In addition, students in the last year of the aforementioned degree program (177 subjects) were surveyed to obtain their perception of the professional opportunities in international commerce and international relations, since this degree program does not offer courses that allow them to study these areas. Results: Both sectors are promising career opportunities, but translators and interpreters require specialized knowledge to find their way into them. Translators and interpreters are versatile figures in the company and prove their worth when the company begins its internationalization process. Discussions: The interviews condense a vision, although incomplete, absolutely accurate of both sectors, which is useful for future graduates who wish to build a career in one of these fields. Conclusions: Given that, in the survey, more than 85% of the students expressed their interest in entering these fields professionally, it would be advisable that, in future reforms of the academic program of the Degree, subjects that provide students with a general overview of both sectors be integrated.

Introducción: Con frecuencia, los alumnos de los estudios en traducción e interpretación que tienen la intención de hacerse un hueco en el mercado laboral desconocen la realidad de su funcionamiento. Por tanto, es necesario que cuenten con orientación profesional durante su preparación académica. Por ello, en la asignatura “La Profesión del Traductor e Intérprete”, impartida en el último curso del Grado en Traducción e Interpretación de la Universidad de Granada, durante el curso 2023/2024, los alumnos realizan un estudio de campo en el que entrevistan a profesionales de distintas áreas. Metodología: En este trabajo se presenta un análisis comparativo de las entrevistas a cuatro profesionales del comercio exterior con formación en traducción e interpretación, y a otros cuatro profesionales del ámbito de las relaciones internacionales. Además, se encuesta al estudiantado del último curso del mencionado Grado (177 sujetos) para recabar su percepción sobre las salidas profesionales en el comercio exterior y las relaciones internacionales, ya que dicho Grado no ofrece asignaturas que permitan inspeccionar estas áreas. Resultados: Ambos sectores se erigen como salidas profesionales prometedoras, pero los traductores e intérpretes requieren de conocimientos especializados para abrirse camino en ellos. Los traductores e intérpretes son figuras versátiles en la empresa y demuestran su valía cuando esta comienza su proceso de internacionalización. Discusión: Las entrevistas condensan una visión, si bien incompleta, absolutamente certera de ambos sectores, que resulta de utilidad para los futuros egresados que deseen labrarse una trayectoria laboral en alguno de esos ámbitos. Conclusiones: Dado que, en la encuesta, más del 85 % de los estudiantes manifiesta su interés por adentrarse profesionalmente en esos ámbitos, sería conveniente que, en futuras reformas del programa académico del Grado, se integraran asignaturas que brinden a los alumnos una panorámica general de ambos sectores.
