Hispani en la milicia urbana de Roma: praetoriani, urbaniciani, vigiles y equites singulares Augusti

Abstract

La integración de Hispania en el mundo romano favoreció la participación de sus habitantes en el ejército. La mayoría sirvió en tropas legionarias y auxiliares, aunque un pequeño grupo cumplió los exigentes requisitos que demandaba el servicio en la milicia urbana de Roma, compuesta, entre otros cuerpos, por la guardia pretoriana, las cohortes urbanas, la unidad de vigiles y los equites singulares Augusti. Este trabajo pretende recopilar, actualizar y estudiar las referencias literarias y epigráficas relativas a los hispanos que sirvieron en estas unidades, ofreciendo una visión de conjunto sobre su papel en la milicia urbana de Roma. Abordaremos, entre otros aspectos, los lugares de procedencia de estos soldados, su estatuto jurídico, su onomástica, sus relaciones sociales y su actividad militar.

The integration of the Iberian Peninsula into the Roman world favoured the participation of Hispanics in the army. Most of them served in legionary and auxiliary troops, although a small group met the demanding requirements for service in the urban militia of Rome, made up, among other units, of the Praetorian Guard, the urban cohorts, the unit of vigiles and the equites singulares Augusti. This work aims to compile, update and study the literary and epigraphic references relating to the Hispanics who served in these units, thus ofering an overview of their role in the urban militia of Rome. We will address, among other aspects, the places of origin of these soldiers, their legal status, their onomastics, their social relations and their military activity.
