Résumé
The approach to the Western Sahara conflict inevitably involves understanding the political situation of Morocco and its interests towards the occupation of this non-self-governing territory, according to international law. In this text we will focus on the analysis of the Moroccan political system in order to explain the maintenance of the occupation of Western Sahara. To do so, we will take into account the nature of the Moroccan political regime and the specificities of its political system, as well as the party system, the functioning of the main political institutions (Monarchy and Government), and the political process, in particular, the legislative elections. A special mention will be devoted to the so-called “advanced regionalization” as a strategy implemented by Morocco in order to bring the territorial division of the State closer to a possible implementation of the Autonomy Plan proposed by Morocco to the United Nations as the only solution to the Western Sahara conflict.
