Kitāb Waṣf al-Firdaws (La descripción del Paraíso)

Abstract

El Kitāb Waṣf al-Firdaws del sabio andalusí nacido cerca de Elvira ʽAbd al-Malik Ibn Ḥabīb (m. aprox. 238/852-3) se inserta dentro de lo que se denomina "Literatura de tradición". Trata de los distintos aspectos del Paraíso musulmán como, por ejemplo, del número de puertas, la descripción de los palacios, de los ríos, de los árboles, de la comida, de los habitantes, del zoco y de las huríes, entre otros temas, aunque los tres últimos capítulos están dedicados a explicar los conceptos del alma y del espíritu y al tormento de la tumba. En estos capítulos se recogen una serie de hadices o dichos y hechos del Profeta relativos a esta temática, en los que se intercalan citas coránicas. La novedad de esta obra radica en que es el primer texto escatológico llegado a al-Andalus que conocemos, y que nos permite indagar sobre los conocimientos que tenían los andalusíes en el s. lX sobre el tema del "Más Allá" y sobre todo por tratarse de la primera traducción al español, que sepamos, de un texto de hadices en el que se describe ampliamente el Paraíso según la tradición islámica.

The Kitāb Waṣf al-Firdaws of the Andalusi scholar born near Elvira ʽAbd al-Malik Ibn Ḥabīb (d. approx. 238/852-3) is inserted within what is called "Literature of tradition". It deals with the different aspects of the Muslim Paradise such as, for example, the number of doors, the description of the palaces, the rivers, the trees, the food, the inhabitants, the souk and the houris, among other topics. although the last three chapters are dedicated to explaining the concepts of the soul and spirit and the torment of the grave. These chapters collect a series of hadiths or sayings and facts of the Prophet related to this topic, in which Quranic quotes are interspersed. The novelty of this work lies in the fact that it is the first eschatological text arrived in al-Andalus, and that it allows us to investigate the knowledge that Andalusi people had in the 9th century on the theme of the "Afterlife", and especially because it is the first translation into Spanish, as far as we know, of a hadith text in which Paradise is broadly described according to the Islamic tradition.
