Abstract
Research in intercultural communication commonly focuses on ethnic stereotypes as influencing factor for intercultural interaction. As a result, they are considered as a disturbance for mutual understanding. The Conversation analysis of German-Spanish initial contact interaction in this study demonstrates how national stereotypes are brought up in intercultural interaction, the functions they serve in this specific situation, and how stereotypes and their corresponding social categories are negotiated by the participants. In addition, the data show that during this communication activity the national category of the participants themselves is eclipsed.
