El ladrillo prensado en la ciudad de Granada. Final del siglo XIX- principio del siglo XX

Abstract

El presente artículo consiste en la transcripción de la importancia que tuvo el desarrollo de la tecnología de cocción del ladrillo durante el siglo XIX, a su consecuencia sobre la arquitectura en la ciudad de Granada. Se consiguió que este material, modesto de la construcción, dejara de ser un sistema que necesitara una recubrición por su permeabilidad y su capacidad de disgregarse, para convertirse en un elemento de acabado de gran plasticidad. Se formalizan nuevas pieles ornamentales, los recursos que ofrece este material y sus posibilidades de engranaje favorecen esta situación. Paralelamente dos acontecimientos que acontecen en ese lapso de tiempo producen que la arquitectura de ladrillo visto adquiera una fuerte presencia en la nueva ciudad. Por un lado, el suceso de la construcción de las azucareras en la vega de Granada con ese material (ladrillo prensado) como fachada y estructura portante, y la aparición de los nuevos estilos arquitectónicos “neos” en Europa. En Granada se presenta el neomudéjar, por la complicidad que el estilo originario medieval detentaba con el material de construcción, el ladrillo. Este artículo presenta una breve exposición sobre el modelo de implementación del ladrillo prensado a finales del XIX y principios del XX, finalizando con un recorrido por las edificaciones que conserva nuestra ciudad de esa etapa histórica, con el material como fachada, diferenciándola según las variadas tipologías estilísticas “neos” que las construcciones de la época presentan.

The present article consists of a transcription of the importance that the development of brick firing technology had during the 19th century, to its consequence on the architecture in the city of Granada. This material, which was a modest construction material, ceased to be a system that needed to be covered due to its permeability and its capacity to disintegrate, and became a finishing element of great plasticity. New ornamental skins are formalized, the resources offered by this material and its possibilities of gearing favor this situation. At the same time, two events that occurred during this period of time led to the acquisition of a strong presence of exposed brick architecture in the new city. On the one hand, the success of the construction of sugar factories in the Granda valley with this material (pressed brick) as a facade and supporting structure, and the appearance of new "neos" architectural styles in Europe. In Granada, the neo-Mudejar style is presented, due to the complicity that the original medieval style had with the building material, brick. This article presents a brief explanation of the model of implementation of pressed brick at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, ending with a tour of the buildings that our city conserves from that historical period, with the material as a facade, differentiating it according to the varied "neos" style typologies that the buildings of the period present.
