Ulises en la novela La vida perra de Juanita Narboni de Ángel Vázquez

Abstract

En el presente artículo analizaremos la influencia de la novela Ulises del escritor irlandés James Joyce en la génesis, estructura y desarrollo de la obra La vida perra de Juanita Narboni, del escritor tangerino Ángel Vázquez. A partir del análisis comparativo de ambas novelas centrado en el estudio de los personajes protagonistas y de la importancia de la ciudad de Tánger, rastrearemos cómo dicha influencia de Joyce y su Ulises, en tanto que renovación literaria del siglo XX. De ese modo, “Penélope”, el capítulo que cierra la obra del escritor irlandés, íntegramente formado por el monólogo de Molly Bloom se transforma en manos de Vázquez en la narración desestructurada y confusa de una Juanita Narboni que da forma de mujer a la moribunda ciudad de Tánger cuando la ciudad ya no se rige por el estatuto internacional y este enclave del Estrecho forma parte del Reino de Marruecos.

In this article we analyze the influence of the novel Ulysses, by the Irish writer James Joyce, on the genesis, structure and development of the novel La vida perra de Juanita Narboni, by the Tangier-born writer Ángel Vázquez. Through a comparative analysis of the two novels, focusing primarily on their main characters and the importance of the city of Tangier, we trace the influence of Joyce and his Ulysses on the more recent work, as a literary renewal of the twentieth century. Thus, “Penelope” the last chapter of the Irish writer’s book, comprised exclusively of a monologue by Molly Bloom, is transformed in the hands of Vázquez into the confused and unstructured narrative of Juanita Narboni, who gives the dying city of Tangier the form of a woman, during the period in which the city is no longer governed by the International Statute and this enclave of the Straits is part of the Kingdom of Morocco.
