Abstract

El rey de Donald Barthelme es una novela que narra acontecimientos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial en un Reino Unido regido por el rey Arturo y su corte, por lo que supone la traslación de una leyenda de la Edad Media al corazón del siglo XX. El objetivo de este artículo es mostrar que, a partir de las teorías sobre la ucronía, la obra posee todas las características para ser considerada como perteneciente a este género, y cómo los anacronismos de la obra permiten que El rey se constituya como un mundo alternativo que parodia al nuestro a través de la inclusión de los propios personajes de leyenda y de sus formas de entender los diferentes aspectos de la realidad.

Donald Barthelme’s The King is a novel about the events of World War II in a United Kingdom ruled by King Arthur and his court, thus translating a legend from the Middle Ages to the mid-20th century. The purpose of this article is to link the novel to the theory of uchronia and highlight the features on the text to be considered as part of this genre, and to show how anachronisms on The King make an alternative world possible. Furthermore, the novel is a parody of our reality through the inclusion of legendary characters themselves and their ways of understanding different aspects of reality.
