Concepción Arenal y la Cuestión Social: Reflexiones sobre la asistencia a los necesitados en la España decimonónica

Abstract

En la España decimonónica Arenal se consolidó como referente ideológico del campo crítico social. Influenciada por el catolicismo social su obra buscaba repensar el lugar de la asistencia social. De su multifacética obra nos centramos en La beneficencia, la filantropía y la caridad pues reúne los elementos clave que validarían sus ideas y propuestas sobre la beneficencia pública. Experta en la cuestión social defendía la participación del Estado como regulador de las actividades asistenciales, velando por la calidad y efectividad de los servicios prestados a los depauperados. En este artículo analizamos algunas de sus ideas sobre el papel de la mujer en la sociedad española de finales del siglo XIX, que ayudan a interpretar su vida y obra.

In nineteenth-century Spain, Concepción Arenal established herself as an important thinker in the critical social field. Influenced by social Catholicism, her work sought to rethink the place of social assistance. Among her multifaceted writings, this paper intends to focus on beneficence, philanthropy, and charity, since they bring together the key elements that would validate her ideas and proposals on public welfare. A scholar of social issues, she defended the participation of the State as a regulatory and monitoring element of the assistance activities, ensuring the quality and effectiveness of the services provided to impoverished populations. This paper also analyzes some of her ideas about the role of the woman in the Spanish society in the XIX century, that help to interpret her life and work.
